This Is How My Brain Works
-
I entered independent school in fifth grade as one of the only Black girls in my class. My teachers were kind. My classmates were polite. And still—I felt the quiet pressure to blend in.
So I did. I wore polka-dotted ribbon belts and double-popped polos. I talked casually about sports I’d never played and country clubs I didn’t belong to. I tucked away the parts of me that danced to Santana in the living room and lit up over my mom’s ackee and saltfish with handmade dumplings.
By all the usual metrics, I was thriving. But looking back, I know what I was really doing was adapting. Performing. Fitting in. And that’s not the same as belonging.
And all that energy I spent on fitting in? That was energy I wasn’t spending on learning.
That realization changed everything. As a new teacher, I started putting words to what I had lived. I made a commitment to build learning environments where students like me didn’t have to code-switch to succeed. That commitment still anchors my work today.

When classrooms hum with trust, students lean in. They take intellectual risks, ask real questions, and meet complexity with curiosity. I’ve seen what’s possible when learning environments are designed with intention—where students feel not just welcomed, but deeply known.
Still, in many schools, I encounter rooms where students hesitate—not because they lack interest or insight, but because the foundation of belonging hasn’t been built yet. When students don’t feel safe to be vulnerable, their brilliance gets hidden. They hold back—not out of apathy, but out of self-protection.
That’s why I start with belonging: not as a buzzword, but as a condition for courageous learning. I help schools design for trust—integrating identity, voice, and connection into the daily fabric of teaching and learning. Because when students feel anchored, they don’t just show up. They soar.

I believe the work of equity isn’t about adding more programs—it’s about redesigning the systems that shape student experience.
I take a systems-based, human-centered approach to strategy—grounded in deep listening and informed by the lived realities of students. I see school ecosystems as interlocking constellations of people, routines, and structures that either reinforce or disrupt equity. This perspective helps communities surface root causes and co-create thoughtful, sustainable change.
I root my work in foundational questions aligned to equity-centered transformation:
Who is represented in our curriculum, classrooms, and leadership?
Who has access to the resources and support they need to thrive?
Who feels they can show up fully—without code-switching, shrinking, or self-erasure?
This is not checklist work. It's culture work. And it requires both imagination and precision.

Every school is different. But the questions leaders bring me often sound familiar:
How do we create the conditions in which every student can thrive?
How do we move from good intentions to intentional systems?
How do we align our mission with our daily practice—not just for students, but for adults too?
Here are a few of the areas I support:
Systems design for belonging, identity, and intellectual risk-taking
Professional learning focused on instructional leadership and pedagogy
Organizational storytelling that connects school values to daily action
With a Master’s in Education Policy, Organization, and Leadership from Stanford University, and with experience leading instruction at the Stanford d.school, I bridge research, creativity, and educational practice in ways that resonate with independent school communities.

Start with the right question. The best solutions begin with curiosity, not urgency. I spend time understanding the real challenge—because how we frame the problem shapes everything that follows.
Trust the wisdom in the room. Students, educators, and communities already hold so much of what they need. My role is to help surface that insight and move it into action—together.
Center joy, identity, and learning. These aren’t separate goals. When students feel seen and adults feel valued, deep learning follows. The strongest systems make space for all three to thrive.
